Meetings

 We usually meet at 10.30 am on the second Sunday of each month, except when a public holiday occurs that weekend. In 2008 our meetings will be on 10 February; 16 March;

13 April; 11 May; 15 June; 13 July; 10 August; 14 September; 12 October; 9 November.

Meetings are held in Room 3, Hughes Community Centre, Wisdom St, Hughes.

Meetings include talks and demonstrations. Members share their knowledge, ideas and experience of growing cacti and succulents in the Canberra climate. Refreshments are provided and members may borrow books and journals from the library. Books, plants and pots are often available for sale at meetings.

Visitors are always welcome at meetings. If you wish, email us beforehand for details.

Activities

Activities members enjoy include visits to collections of local members, interstate societies and public cactus and succulent gardens and nurseries. We participate in community days at Civic and Floriade and other venues around Canberra, offering cactus and succulent plants for sale and giving cultural advice. In 2001, the ACT society hosted the biennial convention of Cactus and Succulent Societies of Australasia.

Members of the society continually look for plants which grow well in this region. Here are links to short lists of cactus and succulents which are recommended for Canberra, but there are many others. We hope eventually to be able to illustrate these lists with photos of plants grown by members.

Membership

Members include a whole range of people interested in growing cactus and succulent plants from school students to people who have been growing these plants for many decades.

The annual subscription is $ 25.00 p.a. although two adults living at the same address may apply for a Household membership at $35.00 p.a. Aged pensioners and students may apply for concessional membership. This is $20 for an individual and $30 for household.

The Society's financial year begins each 1 May. New members who join from 1 November may pay half the annual subscription for the year.

If you would like to join the society, you can send us a membership application form. Simply type in your details, print and sign it and mail it to the above address or, better still, bring it along to a meeting.

The Newsletter

The monthly newsletter includes articles on a variety of cactus and succulent topics and events. All members or other interested people are invited to contribute articles to the newsletter. A selection of articles and other useful information from past editions may be found on the Newsletter page.
